Travel with mobile data

The Tokyo eSIM is designed for a traveller arriving around Tokyo's airports, stations and neighbourhoods. During a visit with rail transfers, timed reservations and frequent changes of location, a mobile data connection helps with finding station exits, opening digital tickets, checking route changes and contacting accommodation. Being able to check a route or message your host is useful when a travel day changes unexpectedly, particularly before you have access to hotel Wi-Fi. This is a digital data plan for a compatible, unlocked phone: you can keep your existing physical SIM in place while selecting the travel eSIM for data. Tokyo is the name of this product, while the Supported Countries field lists Japan. If your trip also includes Kyoto or Osaka, review the listed coverage; a later stop in another country requires its own confirmed plan. The city or destination name helps you identify this trip, but you should always check the Supported Countries information on this page before choosing a plan for a broader itinerary.

Coverage and local networks

The product's Technical Specs list Japan as its supported destination. The recorded partner networks include KDDI/au 5G, SoftBank 5G, although your phone's actual connection and available speed depend on the network, your device, location and conditions at the time. A 5G or 4G label in the specifications is not a promise of that speed at every address. On underground platforms, crowded indoor areas and outlying parts of a wider Japan itinerary, service can be less predictable than around a major transport hub or a busy district. Plan for short gaps in mobile access rather than assuming continuous reception throughout the journey. Before leaving for a longer transfer, save rail tickets, the address of your hotel and the next station exit so that important travel information remains available without a signal.

Digital installation

After purchase, install the eSIM using the instructions delivered with your order while you have a stable internet connection. If the order provides a one-tap installation link for your device, open that link on the phone and follow the prompts. Another option is to display the supplied QR code on a second screen and scan it through the phone's Add eSIM or Add mobile plan settings. Check that your device supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked before buying. Prepare the installation at a convenient time, then choose the eSIM as your mobile data line according to the activation instructions. Keep a copy of the order details accessible offline, particularly if you will be moving between flights, trains or accommodation soon after arrival.

Choose the Unlimited plan duration that covers your full trip, including arrival and departure.

Choose the Unlimited plan duration that covers your full trip, including arrival and departure. Route checks, accommodation messages and tickets tend to consume less data than streaming, video calls, cloud backups and sharing your connection. On a visit with rail transfers, timed reservations and frequent changes of location, repeated small data checks can add up over several days. Check the Hotspot entry in this Unlimited plan's Technical Specs. If supported by your phone and plan, connected devices share the same connection. Check the plan's speed-reduction and fair-use terms, especially for video, uploads and cloud backups. You can top up this Unlimited eSIM by adding extra days of validity, not GB. Compare the available options rather than assuming that a plan with more data is always necessary for a short visit.

Your number and travel plans

This is a data-only eSIM: it does not supply a new telephone number, ordinary voice minutes or SMS. You can keep your main SIM enabled if you need your usual number for calls, verification codes or other messages, while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. Check your primary line's roaming settings before departure so it does not use data unexpectedly. Internet-based messages and calls can use the plan's data where those services are available locally. If your itinerary goes beyond Japan, compare each additional country with the coverage list; a nearby border or island is not included automatically. Keep tickets, addresses and meeting points offline for periods when service varies, and rely on the current product specifications for the precise plans on offer.
