Turkey eSIM Blocked in 2026: How to Stay Connected

Traveler checking an eSIM provider site in Turkey

Turkey has not banned eSIM technology. Since July 2025, its telecom regulator has blocked access, from inside Turkey, to the websites and apps of many international eSIM sellers. An eSIM bought, installed and activated before you arrive keeps working on Turkish networks. The problem starts when you try to buy, fix or top up a plan after landing.

This guide explains what happened, who is affected, what still works, and how to prepare from the US before departure.

TL;DR

  • The block targets provider websites and apps accessed from Turkey. It does not target eSIM technology or mobile data.
  • Buy, install and activate your eSIM before the flight. Then data works on arrival without visiting any blocked page.
  • Buying, installing, activating and using are four separate steps. Only the first, and top-ups, depend on a website.
  • Short tourist stays are generally exempt from IMEI registration. The 120-day rule applies to devices brought in for longer.
  • eSIMGlobe offers Turkey eSIM plans that you can order from the US and receive by email before you travel.

What happened to international eSIM providers in Turkey

On 10 July 2025, Turkey’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) took a decision that cut access from Turkey to the websites and apps of eSIM providers. The decision is recorded in a written parliamentary question submitted to the Turkish parliament, which also notes that the reasons were not clearly shared with the public.

The first reports named 13 providers. Tech.az reported restrictions on 13 companies, including Airhub, Airalo, aloSIM, BNESIM, GlobaleSIM, FlexiRoam, Holafly, Holiday eSIM, Nomad and Instabridge. Within two weeks, Türkiye Today counted at least 35 blocked digital SIM providers.

The Turkish newspaper Hürriyet explained at the time that eSIM technology is not completely banned in Turkey. What was restricted was access to certain international service providers.

Why the restrictions were introduced

No detailed public legal rationale has been published. Digital rights expert Professor Yaman Akdeniz of Istanbul Bilgi University has said the blocking was carried out without a clear public justification, as Türkiye Today reported. The widely discussed reading is that the policy protects the market share of domestic operators such as Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom, and pushes visitors toward local SIM cards and roaming bundles. That is an interpretation, not an official statement.

A year later, the picture is stable. The findyouresim update from 2026 says the eSIMs themselves kept working and still do, while the websites and apps remain the point of friction. A dated test from Istanbul, Nomad Istanbul’s 2026 access checks, covers eSIM stores, VPN sites and other services and was updated on 18 October 2026.

Which international eSIM providers are affected

The blocked list is long and changes. Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily, Instabridge, BNESIM, Ubigi, GigSky and FlexiRoam appear in public reports. Treat any list as a snapshot. Enforcement is uneven, and some smaller or newer platforms load for a while before being added.

Three points matter for planning:

  1. The block is checked from inside Turkey. From the US, the same sites load normally. You will not see a problem when you shop at home.
  2. It affects the storefront and the app. Logging in, buying, scanning a new QR code from a page, or topping up inside the provider app may fail on Turkish networks.
  3. It is leaky. Reports describe DNS-level or IP-based filtering, so some hotel Wi-Fi networks that use Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) DNS let blocked pages load. You cannot count on this, and it is a poor basis for a trip.

A travel eSIM with a blocked brand name can still be a perfectly good eSIM. The risk is not the quality of the data. The risk is needing the provider’s website at the wrong moment.

Where eSIMGlobe stands

We sell prepaid, data-only eSIM plans for 170+ countries, and eSIMGlobe is not affected by the restrictions that hit the main providers. Even so, the safest routine is the same for every brand: complete the purchase and setup before you reach Turkish airspace. That removes any dependence on how a website loads from a Turkish network.

Can tourists still use international travel eSIMs in Turkey?

Yes. findyouresim reports that a travel eSIM bought, installed and activated before arrival keeps working. The restriction targets the provider platforms, not the network connection. TechRadar’s coverage also noted a catch: if you wait until you are in Turkey, you may not be able to reach the sellers.

Some practical consequences:

  • A plan installed at home works without opening any blocked page.
  • A plan that runs out of data in Turkey may be hard to top up if its seller is blocked. Buy enough data, or a plan with generous allowance, to cover the whole trip.
  • Hotel Wi-Fi is not a reliable backup for fixing a failed setup.
  • Your US SIM can stay in the phone for calls and texts, while the eSIM carries data.

How data actually reaches your phone

A travel eSIM is a profile that tells your phone which network to use. In Turkey it connects through partner networks under roaming agreements. It is not a long-term local subscription. This is why the block on provider websites does not change how data flows once the profile is active.

Buying, installing, activating and using: four different steps

Most confusion comes from treating “eSIM” as one event. The Turkish restriction touches only parts of the first step.

Step What happens Needs the provider website? Affected by Turkey’s block?
Buying You pay and receive the eSIM by email Yes Yes, if you try it from inside Turkey
Installing You scan the QR code or enter details in phone settings No, once you have the QR code No
Activating The profile connects to a network and starts the plan No No, when done as the plan instructs
Using Your phone moves data over local partner networks No No

Two further details help.

Installing is not always activating. Some plans start the validity period when the profile first connects to a network in the destination. Others start at installation. Read the plan page before you install so you do not burn days at home. Our guides on how to install and activate an eSIM before traveling abroad and on activating your eSIM step by step cover the order of steps.

Using needs data roaming switched on for the eSIM line. Set the eSIM as your data line, turn on data roaming for it, and turn data roaming off for your home SIM to avoid roaming charges from your US carrier.

Why setting up before you arrive prevents problems

Pre-installation turns a regulatory risk into a non-event. Here is what it removes.

  • No dependence on a blocked site. The QR code is already in your phone. Nothing needs to load from Turkish networks.
  • No scramble at the airport. Arrival halls are crowded and Wi-Fi is patchy. Troubleshooting a setup with no data is the worst version of the problem.
  • A chance to test compatibility. At home you can confirm your phone is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked, and you can contact support while everything loads normally.
  • Instant first connection. When the plane lands, you turn off airplane mode and the plan connects.

A pre-trip checklist

  1. Check your phone. It must support eSIM and be unlocked by your carrier. Your carrier can confirm the lock status.
  2. Buy the plan a few days before departure. Delivery is by email, and you can finish the setup unhurried.
  3. Install on home Wi-Fi. Scan the QR code from another screen, or follow the manual details in the email.
  4. Label the line. Name it “Turkey data” in settings so you pick the right line later.
  5. Leave data roaming off until you land, unless the plan says otherwise. Then switch it on for the eSIM line only.
  6. Save the support contact and the installation email offline. Screenshots work.
  7. Size the data. Maps, ride-hailing, translation and messaging add up. If you expect heavy use, an unlimited plan avoids the top-up problem entirely.

eSIM Turkey

Our approach to Turkey travel data

We are an e-commerce eSIM seller. Customers choose a country or regional plan, pay once, and receive the profile by email. There are no subscriptions. From the first reports in July 2025, the question we heard from travelers was always the same: will the eSIM I buy still connect once I land? Our answer has been the same too. Install before you fly.

Our approach to Turkey travel data — overview diagram

We do not treat the Turkish situation as a reason to avoid eSIM. The technology is sound, and the restriction applies to storefronts. What changes is how you plan. A traveler to Istanbul, Cappadocia or the Aegean coast should handle purchase and setup at home, carry a plan large enough for the whole trip, and keep their home SIM for calls and verification codes.

We also say plainly what no seller can promise. We cannot predict which websites Turkish authorities will block next. We design the routine around that uncertainty: the buying happens where the open internet is available, and the connection afterwards does not depend on any web page. Our site is built for fast delivery, QR activation and 24/7 support, and a money-back guarantee applies if the network fails, so the travel decision rests on a clear process.

Why eSIMGlobe fits a Turkey trip better than the alternatives

Here are the realistic options for a US traveler, compared on criteria that matter in Turkey.

Option Setup before arrival Exposure to Turkish block Cost control Main drawback
eSIMGlobe Turkey eSIM Yes, by email, instant delivery Not affected, and the plan is installed before you land Fixed prepaid price, no subscription Needs an eSIM-capable, unlocked phone
Blocked international eSIM brands Possible from the US Storefront and app blocked in Turkey, top-ups may fail Prepaid Support and top-up are weak inside Turkey
Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey or Türk Telekom SIM Only after arrival, in person None, they are local Local pricing and registration Queues, passport checks, and registration
US carrier roaming (Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile) Already in place None Often costly day passes or limited speeds Terms vary by plan, so check before you go

Roaming with a US carrier is convenient, and some plans include international options. Check your own plan’s terms and daily fees. A Lonely Planet guide to connecting in Türkiye notes that your phone will work if roaming is on, but depending on your provider and package you may not get online, and costs can climb.

A local Turkish SIM works, but you buy it after landing, and foreign visitors face a registration process. That means time at a shop and documents, which is the reverse of what most travelers want after a long flight. A pre-installed eSIM from eSIMGlobe avoids both the local queue and the storefront problem.

Do you need to register your phone in Turkey?

The IMEI registration rule is a separate issue from the eSIM block, and it is often mixed up with it. The Koç University guide explains that, under rules from the Turkish ICTA (BTK), each person bringing a mobile device into Türkiye must register it within 120 days of arrival. The registration is done through the e-Devlet portal and involves a government fee. The official registration methods page describes how devices are matched in the central equipment identity register.

For a typical tourist, the practical picture is simpler. Short stays under 120 days do not require registration. Visitors who stay longer, such as students, remote workers and expatriates, must register to avoid their local connection being disabled. A travel eSIM used for a short trip works through roaming rather than as a long-term local subscription, so tourists on a plan like ours do not need to register for short-term travel. If you plan to stay beyond 120 days, confirm your situation with the BTK or an official Turkish source before you travel.

Rules for tourists differ widely from one service to another. For a comparison of a different tourist check-in procedure, see jet ski rental check-in for tourists.

What to do if you are already in Turkey without data

Some readers find this page after landing. Options, in order:

  1. Use hotel or airport Wi-Fi to reach your email. If you already bought a plan, the QR code and instructions are in your inbox. Installing from a saved QR code does not need the blocked storefront.
  2. Check that the eSIM line is the active data line and that data roaming is on for it.
  3. Restart the phone and toggle airplane mode.
  4. Contact support. We offer 24/7 human support, so write from any open connection.
  5. If you have nothing installed, buy a local SIM from an operator such as Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom, with your passport.

A VPN is a common suggestion. The Nomad Istanbul tests say VPNs are not banned, but most VPN websites are blocked, so download one before you leave. Do not count on a VPN to rescue a purchase at the last minute.

Practical tips for staying connected in Turkey

  • Pick the plan type by how you travel. A week in Istanbul with Wi-Fi at the hotel needs less than a two-week road trip with navigation. Our eSIM purchasing tips for 2026 explain how to size data.
  • Keep your home number reachable. Banks and apps send verification codes to your US number, so keep the home SIM active with roaming off for data.
  • Download offline maps for areas with weak signal, such as rural Anatolia and mountain roads.
  • Carry a power bank. Constant data use drains the battery.
  • Read our related Turkey guides. See eSIM providers blocked in Turkey and an eSIM that works in Istanbul.

One more note on timing. Do not wait for the airport. Buying a few days ahead leaves room to fix a rejected QR code or a locked phone before you fly.

FAQ

Is eSIM banned in Turkey?

No. eSIM technology is legal and works on Turkish networks. The restriction since July 2025 blocks access to many international providers’ websites and apps from inside Turkey. A plan installed before arrival still delivers data.

Will my eSIM work if I bought it before the trip?

It should, provided it was installed and set up on a compatible, unlocked phone, with data roaming on for the eSIM line. The block affects buying and account pages, not the data connection. If something fails after landing, contact the seller’s support through any open connection.

Can I top up my eSIM while in Turkey?

It depends on whether the seller’s site or app loads from Turkish networks. For blocked brands, topping up may fail. The simplest fix is to choose enough data before departure, or an unlimited plan such as eSIM Turkey Unlimited.

Do tourists need to register their phone in Turkey?

Visits shorter than 120 days generally do not require IMEI registration. Longer stays require registration through the e-Devlet portal, with a government fee. Check the BTK-based guidance or an official Turkish source for your case.

VPN use is not banned, according to Nomad Istanbul’s access checks, but most VPN websites are blocked. Install the app before you travel. A 2026 licensing draft was reported, so check current rules close to your departure date.
